Brymor News - August 2010

Constructing Smiles at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham

Brymor’s Healthcare Team have been actively working within QA Hospital, Cosham since August 2006. Working as part of Carillion’s construction team, Brymor have refurbished every block, on every floor as well as half of the surrounding buildings.

The new state-of-the-art Queen Alexandra Hospital has been developed to bring together the services from the original QA Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, and the Royal Hospital Haslar, on one site. To accommodate this QA has more than doubled its previous size with about 1400 beds across the new and existing parts of the hospital. This new hospital now offers patient facilities that are amongst the best in Europe.

To put the works in to context our healthcare team, consisting of Paul Heather, Mark Ware and Tony Wotton, refurbished 16 wards in the east block, reconfigured the main kitchen,   refurbished all 14 operating theatres and completely reformed the sterile services department.

In addition the team worked within A & E, discharge lounge, numerous offices, pharmacy and diagnostic imaging. They formed 3 new scanner rooms and associated works as well as constructing 13 new theatres and associated suite rooms. These works totalled £6 Million.

Throughout the contract the team were working within very sensitive live environments and had to work with strict hygiene and infection control measures. After a third and final HSDU control of infection inspection Liam Florey Project Manager for Carillion stated:

“Please take comfort in knowing that by far this is the best quality of finish delivered on the whole of the QAH PFI application, simply unparalleled in finish”.

Thank you and your team for the tenacious effort produced in delivering a building finishes programme against a timeframe that initially felt insurmountable. Not only did you achieve the finishes programme in the agreed timeframe, but to a quality that has been recognised as “unparalleled”.

I would also like to take this opportunity to single out the determination, conscientiousness and evident ability of Tony Wotten, who pretty well orchestrated the building finishes delivery. Due to the area profile, Tony and I collectively worked through an intense snagging regime that has clearly paid dividends”.

To round off this fantastic scheme Brymor have donated a selection of fun activities and games to the Starfish Ward within the New Paediatric Department to ensure smiles from the people who really matter have also been constructed on the new QA development.
